Why some phone photos end up sideways
A phone doesn't actually rotate the picture. When you shoot in portrait, the camera saves the image in the sensor's landscape orientation and adds an orientation flag (EXIF Orientation) telling viewers to rotate it 90 degrees. Photo apps read the flag, but a PDF doesn't, so the raw image lands on its side.
MyPDF reads the flag and rotates the image itself before placing it in the PDF, so pages always face the right way with nothing to fix afterwards.
Choosing the right page size
- A4 documents you need to submit — A4: a standard page that prints in the right proportions with a neat white border.
- Slides or screenshots — fit to image: no extra border, so they fill the screen.
- Product photos or a portfolio — fit to image, keeping each picture's proportions.
- Small cards or receipts — A4: a full sheet that looks like a document, not a tiny picture.
Order matters more than you'd think
When you select several images at once, the browser sorts them by file name, which may not match the order you took them, especially when numbers in names differ in length ("page2" sorts after "page10"). After adding them, drag the image cards to rearrange, and always check the order before creating the file, particularly for contracts.
Supported files and keeping the size down
JPG, PNG and WebP are supported directly. HEIC files from newer iPhones are not: switch the camera format from "High Efficiency" to "Most Compatible" before shooting, or share the photo once by email or a messaging app, which converts it to JPG.
A modern phone photo is 3–8 MB, so a 20-page document can become too large to upload anywhere. Compress the images first with MyPDF's image compression tool, scaling them to 1920px, which is still sharp enough for text. The PDF will be several times smaller and still readable.
Photographing documents well
- Place the paper on a flat, dark surface that contrasts with it.
- Shoot straight from above, paper edges parallel to the frame.
- Avoid your own shadow; a side window beats a ceiling light.
- For several pages, try the camera scanner, which shoots page after page and combines them into a PDF.
- To make the text searchable, run the file through OCR.
FAQ
Will my images lose quality?
No. JPG and PNG images are embedded without recompression. The only exception is images that need rotating upright, which are re-saved at 95% quality.
Can I photograph documents with my phone and combine them into one file?
Yes. Or use the camera scanner tool, which also sharpens the pages.
Can I mix portrait and landscape images?
Yes. In fit-to-image mode, each page is sized to its own image.
Does it accept HEIC photos from an iPhone?
Not directly. Set the camera to Most Compatible, or share the photo by email or a messaging app first so it becomes a JPG.
