Unlock PDF — Remove Password Online Free
Remove printing and copying restrictions, or a password you know, from PDFs you have the right to use.
Remove permission restrictions such as "no printing" or "no copying text" from documents you own or are authorized to use, so you can work with the file freely again. If the file needs a password just to open, you can remove that too, as long as you know the password.
How to unlock a PDF (3 steps)
- Open the locked PDF.
- Click Unlock, entering the password if the file needs one to open.
- Download the unrestricted file.
PDFs have two kinds of password, and they're very different
Before unlocking, it helps to know which kind of lock your file has, because what's possible is completely different.
- Open password (user password) — you can't open the file at all without typing the password first. It can be removed only if you know the password: enter it, and the tool creates a new file that no longer asks for one.
- Permissions password (owner password) — the file opens and reads normally, but you can't print, copy text or edit. This can be removed without the password, because it is only a permissions setting in the file.
What this tool does not do: it does not guess or crack passwords you don't know. If a file needs an open password and you don't have it, the tool can't help. Be wary of sites that claim they can, since that means handing your encrypted document to someone else.
Why people unlock PDFs
- Bank and insurance documents — statements and policies are often locked with an ID number or date of birth. When you need to send one to your employer or attach it to a loan application, the recipient can't open it until it's unlocked.
- Invoices and payslips — passwords protect them in transit by email, but once filed in company records, the lock prevents searching and merging.
- Documents you can't copy from — some research papers and manuals block copying, which gets in the way even when you have the right to use them.
- Files that won't merge — merge tools need unlocked files.
What to watch out for after unlocking
An unlocked file is a file anyone can open. If it contains financial or personal information, think carefully before forwarding it or storing it where others can reach it. A safer approach:
- Unlock only for what you need to do, such as merging or extracting the pages you have to send.
- If you need to pass it on, set a new password agreed with the recipient. Don't send an unprotected file over chat.
- If parts need hiding, use Redact PDF before sending.
- Delete the unlocked file from your device when you're done.
Privacy during unlocking
Locked files are the ones owners chose to guard: bank statements, payslips, insurance policies. Uploading one with its password to an unknown website hands a stranger both the document and the key. MyPDF unlocks files in your own browser; the password and file never leave your device. You can confirm this in the Network tab of your browser's developer tools.
