How to merge PDF files (3 steps)

What actually happens when you merge

Merging doesn't just stick files end to end. It creates a new file and copies the pages from each document into it, one after another. Here is what comes along and what doesn't:

• Text, images, and fonts — all carried over at the same quality, with no re-compression.
• Fillable form fields — may stop working after the merge, so finish filling in forms first.
• Bookmarks and tables of contents — usually lost, because they are tied to the structure of the original file.
• Password-protected files — must be unlocked first. Enter the password in MyPDF and the file is unlocked on your device.
• File size — roughly the total of all the files. If that is too large, compress it afterwards.

Get the order right the first time

The most common problem isn't a failed merge — it's pages in the wrong order. The browser lists files by name, not by the order you clicked them, and it sorts names alphabetically, so "page10.pdf" comes before "page2.pdf".

There are two fixes. Name your files with the same number of digits from the start (01, 02 … 10), or, after adding them, drag the file cards into place (on a phone, tap the ← → buttons). Either way, check the preview before you download.

Common uses

• Official applications — many portals accept only one upload, so ID copies, supporting documents, and the form itself need to go in one file. Follow the order the organisation asks for.
• Job applications — combine your resume, certificates, and portfolio into one tidy file instead of sending several.
• Client work — a quotation with a product catalogue, or a contract with its annexes.
• School work — a report with its appendices, or slides with worksheets.

If you have a mix of PDFs and photos, add them all at once. Images are converted into PDF pages automatically before merging.

What to do after merging

1. Add page numbers with Page Numbers. A document assembled from several files should be numbered continuously, especially contracts and reports.
2. Check for blank pages with Remove Blank Pages, since scans often include empty backs of sheets.
3. Reduce the size if the merged file is larger than the destination accepts.
4. Check before sending — the page count, the file size, and whether a password is still set.

How many files, and how large?

MyPDF sets no limit on the number or size of files, because nothing is uploaded. The real limit is your device's memory. In practice, an ordinary computer handles several hundred pages comfortably. On a phone, around 50–100 pages per merge is recommended to keep the browser responsive. If the files are very large, you'll get a warning before the merge starts so you can decide whether to continue.
